I headed up to @LinkedIn's London HQ in mid-March for The Marketing Practice's #mediaweek event where I was presenting on my specialist topic of #thoughtleadership. It was a packed afternoon of sessions with Nathalie Dorricott talking about how Palo Alto Networks is using #AI across its marketing and Sarah Stephenson talking about #socialmedia and #thoughtleadership. From LinkedIn, we heard about how the platform can be used to enable buyer group marketing, trends in video marketing and influencer marketing.
As someone who has 'rebranded' myself as an #influencer (yes, you might say jumped onboard the bandwagon!) and is very invested in #thoughtleadership, I do get a little concerned how the terms seem to being used without much specificity and sometimes interchangably. For example: my definition of thought leaders would be respected individuals with significant subject matter knowledge, whereas LinkedIn's seems to be 'anyone willing to use social media'. Similarly, as I'm learning, being an effective influencer requires a specific set of skills and positioning - it's more than having simply a social media account.
Despite this quibble, it was great to catch up with Peter Scoffham amongst other people, and thanks to Paul Everett and Joe Kiddle for inviting me to speak.
